Cameron to fight 2020 general election?
Senior Conservatives now believe that David Cameron will go on to fight the 2020 general election. This would be a U-turn from his pre-election pledge not to stand for a third term.
One senior Conservative said in the Telegraph “There is a growing belief that the lure of power will be too strong … he has just won a majority. He is stronger than ever and I expect him to continue and find a way to go back on what he said before the election.”
Readers of the Telegraph are currently split 55:45 on whether Cameron should stand in 2020. Paul Goodman in Conservative Home argues the PM should not stand again for election as he has promised not to do so. This issue could clearly split the Conservative Party.
