Midnight Drinks Reception
This year we held our annual Midnight Drinks Reception on the Sunday evening (28 September). The event has become something of an institution at Party Conference and once again the room was full to capacity. Conservative Party Chairman, Grant Shapps MP was the keynote speaker and reminded us of Margaret Thatcher’s CWF Nicholas Ridley Memorial Lecture and set out the importance of preserving Lady Thatcher’s legacy.
Debate on Welfare Reform : How to transform Benefits Street
We also held a debate on Welfare Reform attended by over 100 people.
Our Chairman Sir Gerald Howarth MP and the Minister of State for Employment, Rt Hon Esther McVey MP, were joined by James Bartholomew, Author of The Welfare State We’re In and Iain Murray, Vice President of the Competitive Enterprise Institute and Author of Stealing You Blind: How Government Fatcats Are Getting Rich Off of You, who set out how to take the current welfare reforms forward.
They agreed that the reforms enacted by Iain Duncan Smith were making a big difference and helping people off welfare and into work. They talked through examples of Welfare Reform around the world and how reform can change society for the better, and give people hope of a better life.
