Theo Clarke: How the Government Can Help End Cultural Destruction

In May Islamic State captured Palmyra, the Roman ruins designated a UNESCO world heritage site, prompting international concern about the fate of the city’s antiquities. Earlier this month it was confirmed that jihadis had destroyed a 2,000 year old statue outside the Palymyra museum. Photographs online show several carved busts being destroyed with sledgehammers, most likely stolen from local tombs. This weekend's highly controversial Sun article about the Queen and Nazi salutes is not the first time the paper has got into trouble with similar circumstances. The printers of the Sun during the Miner's Strike refused to publish the above photo of Arthur Scargill giving a Nazi salute under the title 'Mine Fuhrer'.
